The Truth About Tooth Extraction

Do you wonder and worry about what to expect from a tooth extraction? Ease both your mind and your pain with these tips about what to expect, as well as helpful hints for toothache relief and healing.

Why Does My Tooth Need to be Removed?

There are a number of reasons why your dentist may decide a tooth extraction is necessary. Generally, this only occurs in serious cases where the teeth are threatening your dental development and overall health. The most common reasons for pulling teeth include:

  • Loose teeth caused by gum disease
  • Teeth overcrowding
  • Treating a severe infection
  • When there’s the possibility of infection

What Can I Expect When My Tooth is Extracted?

Your general dentist can perform your tooth extraction, but serious cases may call for an oral surgeon who specializes in pulling teeth. The procedure itself should cause no pain because your dentist will give you an anesthetic to numb the area. In cases where a tooth is impacted or several teeth are being pulled, you may be put under general anesthesia, so that you will be able to sleep through the entire procedure. After the extraction, the dentist will pack a gauze pad into the socket where the tooth was removed and ask you to bite down. This not only helps to stop the bleeding, but also aids in the formation of a protective blood clot that will allow the area to heal. On occasion, the blood clot will break during recovery and cause a painful condition called dry socket. If this occurs, the dentist will place a special dressing over the socket in order to form a new blood clot and provide toothache relief.

What Should I Do after my Tooth Extraction?

You will need to relax and reduce activity for a few days after the procedure. These expert recommendations can help reduce the risk of infection, speed recovery, and minimize discomfort after pulling teeth:

  • Take pain relievers suggested by your dentist to get toothache relief during recovery.
  • Do not rinse or spit for about six hours after the tooth extraction to avoid dislodging the clot.
  • Six hours after the tooth extraction, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to help prevent infection and promote healing.
  • Avoid drinking from a straw for the day after extraction.
  • Consume soft foods the day after pulling teeth, adding back solid foods as you recover.
  • Prop up your head on pillows to reduce any bleeding while resting.
  • Apply an ice bag to the affected area after the tooth extraction to reduce swelling.
  • Continue to apply ice for 10 minutes at a time.
  • Brush and floss your teeth, being careful to avoid the extraction site.
